MEDICAL SPANISH
StuCo
98-324: Spanish for Healthcare Professionals
What we do
A course designed and created with the objective of improving Spanish fluency in a clinical setting and discussing Latino social-cultural differences, and health disparities in the US.
Why we do it
Medical Spanish is bridging the gap between aspiring healthcare professionals and cultural and language barriers among physicians and the growing Latino population in the US.
mission statement
As the Spanish-speaking population grows across the nation, it is becoming increasingly more important for US healthcare professionals to be comfortable speaking Spanish. This course will combine independent study and interactive in-class activities in order to create clinical settings that will call for your use of Spanish. Our objective is to have students be able to comfortably communicate with Spanish-speaking patients in a culturally sensitive manner. In addition to basic language development, students will learn Latino social-cultural differences and health disparities that disproportionately and unjustly affect the US Latino population. No Spanish prerequisites are necessary. If you are a pre-health student, a Spanish-speaker, or someone interested in gaining an incredible life skill, this is the course for you!
Why this class is awesome
Medical Spanish is a one of kind course that allows you to learn how to comfortably communicate with Spanish-speaking patients in a culturally sensitive manner. Every class focuses on a new specialty, such as Oncology, Emergency Medicine, and Cardiology, in addition to reviewing cultural differences and health disparities among Latinos in the US. Through several interactive in-class activities and games we allow students to have the opportunity to engage in Patient-Physician Spanish-spoken role playing, and other games that test the vocabulary and terminology learned in class such as Lotería (Spanish Bingo), Juego de Riesgo (Spanish Jeopardy), and much, much more!
FUTURE of Medical Spanish
Being able to comfortably communicate with Spanish-speaking patients in a culturally sensitive manner is becoming every day a more and more essential skill for all healthcare professionals in the US, and we hope that this curriculum is adopted by more medical institutions across the nation and as well as among undergraduate institutions training pre-health students.
